Were they right to condemn Jesus to death?

The Lord Jesus Christ was crucified 2000 years ago. His fellow countrymen, whipped into a frenzy by their religious leaders demanded that he be put to death (Luk 23:21). This was despite the judge declaring him not guilty three times (Luke 23:4,13-14,20-22).

Was the judge right to give in to the people and condemn him to death?

Absolutely not!  The Lord Jesus Christ is perfect (SoS 5:10-16). He is holy, the Prince of Peace, the Lamb of God and everything he does is good – no exceptions (Mar 7:37). He is God in human form (Joh 1:1-4) and sinless :

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21

He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 2 Peter 2:22

You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.  1 John 3:5

Put simply he was guilty of nothing!

Why did God allow this miscarriage of justice?

The simple, and yet incomprehensible answer is LOVE!

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Romans 5:8

Why does it matter?

In contrast to the Lord Jesus Christ, we, are sinners (Rom 3:23) and as a result, are destined to spend eternity experiencing the wrath of God (Joh 3:36). If we believe that he died for our sins (Joh 3:18) our destiny changes – we receive eternal life.  God, in love, sent his son to die for us to save us and secure us a blessed future (Rom 6:23) – all we need to do is to accept Jesus as our saviour.

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 1 Timothy 1:15
