We are special – God created us differently for a reason
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:26,27
In conjunction with this snippet, reading the first three chapters of Genesis is recommended.
God deliberately created the first humans, Adam and Eve from whom we all descend, different to all other life forms. The Bible shows us that there are several significant differences that help us understand the depth of God’s love for us:
- Divine Declaration. The Holy Trinity (God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirt) proclaimed, “Let US make …” (Gen 1:26). This proclamation, together with the Trinity’s declaration after creating Adam and Eve that creation was “VERY good” (Gen 1:31), shows us that we are uniquely precious to God and have a special purpose.
- In His Image. He created them with the ability to reveal and represent God. Each of us has this same unique, precious blessing and responsibility. (Gen 1:26)
- In His Likeness. They corresponded (and so do we) to God in a particular way. Our unique composition of body, soul and spirit distinguishes us from every living thing and provides us with the ability to discern spiritual and moral truth. We have been given a higher level of intelligence to use for His glory (Gen 1:27)
- To have dominion and rule. He gave them a divine blessing and responsibility. We have the same divine blessing and responsibility, that is to care for the environment we live in remembering that every part of it was created for His glory (Col 1:15-20).
- Personal Creation. Adam and Eve were not simply commanded into existence like the rest of creation (Gen 1:3,6,9,11,14,24). Rather they were personally crafted by God (Gen 2:7).
- Breath of Life. As well as personally creating our ancestors he breathed life into them (Gen 2:7). This contrasts with every other living being. It reminds us there is something eternal in each of us.
- Redemption. The most remarkable aspect about creation is that God did it knowing that we would fail and fall short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23). God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit also knew that the only way we could be redeemed, that is to have the relationship between us and Him restored, would be for the Lord Jesus Christ (God the Son) to die for us (Rom 5:8). His death was horrible and gruesome, it was more terrible than any other death the world has (or will ever) witness – he died this way to save us from a fate that is too awful to describe. God loves us so much that even the horror of being innocently crucified did not deter him from creating Adam and Eve. His love for us is unrivalled – no one loves us as much as he does. We can live both here and in eternity in the benefit of that love if we accept the Lord Jesus Christ as our saviour knowing that he is that one who is alive for evermore, who once was dead!
The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 1Timothy 1:15
When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. Revelation 1:17,18
