Two amazing facts about everlasting life
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. John 17:3
If you believe that Jesus died for your sins, you have eternal life (Joh 3:16; Rom 6:23). God gave it to you the moment you accepted Christ as your Saviour. The most amazing thing about it is who you will spend it with – the Lord Jesus Christ (Joh 14:3).
Another amazing characteristic of eternal life is you can never lose it and it will never be taken away from you. This is because the Holy Spirit seals (identifies, declares and testifies) you as a child of God and guarantees your inheritance until you acquire possession of it (Eph 1:13-14). This same Spirit, who raised Jesus from the dead, dwells in you (Rom 8:9-11) making your salvation and all the spiritual blessings that come with it (Eph 1:3) undeniable. Additionally, you have an intimate relationship with God that can never be broken (Rom 8:35-39). Knowing these things gives each of us (who believe) divine courage to wait patiently for the day when we will see him and be made like him (1 John 3:1-3). On that day, we will experience eternal life in a way that we cannot now (1 Cor 15:50-52, Joh 6:40, Joh 17:2-3).
While we wait for that day, we have the wonderful privilege of learning more about the amazing person with whom we will spend eternity. This is done by praying and meditating on the scriptures (Joh 5:39). The more we learn about him, the more we will realise that our final destiny is to be with someone who is too wonderful to comprehend.
Consider, for example, that the Lord Jesus Christ
- changed water into wine (Joh 2:1-11),
- is “… the Alpha and the Omega, … who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Rev 1:8),
- laid down his life for us (Joh 15:13).
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23
