The worst thing happened to the greatest of all
And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.” Mark 7:37
In a previous snippet we briefly considered how the Lord Jesus Christ is the greatest. We have also recently considered two occasions when good people suffered tragic events (here and here). In this snippet, we focus on the worst act of cruelty that the greatest person to have ever lived endured (Rev 1:17-18). That person is the Lord Jesus Christ and he endured it for you and me (Heb 12:2, Luk 15:7,10).
God’s word provides many descriptions of our Lord Jesus Christ. These descriptions reassure us that he is the only true mediator between God and us (1 Tim 2:5-6). They also show us how different He is from you and me. For example, God makes it clear that we have all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. The Lord Jesus Christ is different:
- He did and continues to do all things well (Mar 7:37).
- There is no sin in him. (1 Joh 3:5).
- He does not know sin (2 Cor 5:21).
- He doesn’t sin (1 Pet 5:22).
Despite these characteristics
- He was rejected and falsely charged with a crime he had not done. (Mark 14:55-59)
- He was falsely convicted and put to death. (Mark 14:60-64)
- He was beaten so badly that He was unrecognisable. (Isa 52:14)
- He had a crown of thorns hammered onto his head. (Mar 15:17)
- He was crucified. (Mar 15:24-25)
This is just a brief outline of what He endured. Remarkably, after crucifixion he rose from the dead. Amazingly, he did it (knowing everything that would happen to him) for you and me, which is why he declared “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (Joh 15:13). This is why he is the only true mediator between us and God (Joh 14:6).
THE GREATEST suffered the WORST so that we might not perish but have eternal life (Joh 3:16). All we need to do is believe (Rom 10:9)!
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. John 19:30
