Jesus is Wondeful, The Ultimate Gift, Part 3

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Isaiah 9:6

The Ultimate Gift is a person of many names (Joh 3:16).  These include Jesus, Christ, Lord, Redeemer, Son of God and Friend.  Every name reveals something special about who he is and what he has done. For example, he was named Jesus because he came to save his people from their sins (Mat 1:21) and he is called Redeemer because he paid a ransom with his own life for you and me (1 Tim 2:5-6).

Long before (700 years) he was born a prophet, inspired by God, gave him five names: Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Father of Eternity and Prince of Peace. In this snippet, we briefly consider the first of these.

He is called Wonderful because he is undeniably:

  • “… altogether desirable.. SoS 5:16

He is called Wonderful because:

  • … “He has done all things well…” Mark 7:37

He is called Wonderful because as God in the flesh he died for us:

  • but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Rom 5:8

There is only one person who can truly claim the name Wonderful.  That person is the Lord Jesus Christ – the Son of God.  He is perfect and came into this world for one purpose: to die on the cross for our sins, thereby giving us an opportunity to have eternal life. Without his death, we are destined to a fate too awful to contemplate.  To have eternal life all we have to do is believe that he died for our sins and then brought himself back to life – never to die again (Joh 10:17-18, Rom 10:9, Heb 10:12, Rev 1:17-18).

O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Psalm 8:9
