The Prince of Peace is the Ultimate Gift, Part 7
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
The Prince of Peace is the Lord Jesus Christ. He is God’s only Son, He is extraordinary and there is no one like him. He has authority over all things and loves each of us more than anyone else. He promises true peace to everyone who believes that he died for their sins. He is the only one powerful enough to give true peace as these three examples show.
- In the middle of a fierce storm with waves that was breaking into the boat he and his disciples were in (Mar 4:37) he commanded the wind to stop and the sea: “Peace! Be still” (Mar 4:39). The wind and sea obeyed him instantly. As a result, everyone made it safely to shore and his disciples understood more about Him and His amazing power.
- He gave peace to a man who was possessed by many demons. This same man could not be restrained and was living amongst tombs crying and cutting himself (Mar 5:5). The Lord gave peace to this man by commanding the demons to come out of him (Mat 8:32). The result was a marvellous transformation – the man was healed and in his right mind and was given a divine purpose to tell his friends what the Lord had done for him as well as the mercy He had shown him (Mar 5:15,19-20).
- He gave peace to his loved ones. On the morning of his resurrection, he appeared unto his disciples who were locked away in fear. On this particular occasion, he appeared stating, “Peace be with you” (Joh 20:26). He did the same a week later and when Thomas, who was not there the first time, saw the holes in his hands that the nails had left and the wound the spear had made in his side he confessed, “My Lord and My God” (Joh 20:28).
As remarkable as these events are, they do not compare to the peace he has provided to each person who accepts him as their saviour. Specifically, the peace with God that is received when a person believes that He died for them (Rom 5:1,8). God makes it very clear that he sent His Son so that we might, in faith, accept him as our saviour – without God’s (and His Son’s) great act of love we would have no hope and remain his enemy indefinitely, destined to experience endless turmoil (Joh 3:18, Rom 5:10).
The peace that Jesus gives is greater than anything in this world (Joh 14:27). It is a peace that can only be described as surpassing all understanding (Php 4:7). Remarkably we can all have this peace by choosing to believe in that he died for us and lives again (Rom 10:9)!
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27
