The Greatest Father

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places” Ephesians 1:3

Greatest Father

Many of us have been given the best possible start in life because of the sacrifices our parents made.  Despite their deep devotion to us they are, like us, fallible. However, there is a Father in heaven who is infallible and demonstrated his great love for us by giving his unique son to die for us (Joh 3:16). If we accept his gift, we will be adopted by the Heavenly Father (Rom 8:15) becoming one of his precious children and will not perish but have eternal life (Rom 6:23).

In the Bible, the Heavenly Father is declared by his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, as “greater” on two occasions.  On the first occasion He is declared as being greater than “all” (Joh 10:29). On the second occasion the Lord Jesus Christ declares his Father to be greater than himself (Joh 14:28).

On the first occasion the Lord Jesus Christ is reminding people that once they are saved, they are saved forever!  Eternal life cannot be taken away. Nothing can stop the infallible Heavenly Father from loving one of his children.  There are many scriptures in the bible that remind us of this fact (i.e., Rom 8:31-39; Rom 10:13, Eph 1:13).

On the second occasion, Jesus says “…the Father is greater than I” (Joh 14:28). This declaration can cause confusion and even lead to a false belief if not properly understood.  Throughout the Bible, numerous verses remind us that Jesus is Lord and God (i.e., Joh 1:1,14, Joh 10:30, 1 Tim 3:16).  Therefore, this verse cannot mean that the Lord Jesus Christ is inferior.  Rather, it simply reminds us that the true and unique Son of God (Mat 27:54) took on the form of a servant humbling himself to the point of death, even the death of the cross (Mat 26:39, Php 2:6-8).

This great, infallible, Heavenly Father sent his unique son to die, then raised him from the dead (Acts 2:23-24, Rom 5:8), so that we can have the opportunity to believe and thereby receive eternal life (1 Joh 3:1-2).  May each person know the “One God and Father of all, who is above all…” (Eph 4:13) as their personal saviour.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” 1 Peter 1:3
