Our Lord keeps silent

And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. John 17:5

When our Lord keeps silent, He does so for our benefit and his (Father’s) glory. This was clearly demonstrated when he endured the cross despising the shame for the joy that was set before him (Heb 12:2). Despite being treated terribly He chose, on multiple occasions to keep silent, reflecting his desire that no one should perish (2 Pe 3:9).

The first time he kept silent was when he was put on trial by corrupt officials.  At this trial, he was falsely accused of many things. Despite the High Priest (the highest-ranked spiritual leader at the time) demanding our Lord answer the false accusations, he remained silent (Mat 26:63). This reflects his righteous character and reminds us he has done all things well (Mar 7:37).

More generally we’re told that when he was cruelly abused, he did not retaliate (1 Pe 2:23). We also know that despite being oppressed and afflicted he kept silent (Isa 53:7).  It is amazing to think that our Lord, the King of Kings, the First and the Last, the Alpha and Omega, the Almighty God (Rev 1:8; 22:13) kept silent, He did not protest, neither did he did complain, nor did he defend himself! Rather he chose to humble himself to the point of allowing cruel people to crucify him (Phil 2:8).

Further, the records of the crucifixion (Mat 27; Luk 23; Mar 15, Joh 20) show us that he kept silent even when they hammered the nails into his hand. We also see him keep silent as they looked up at him and mocked him mercilessly.   Falsely accused, unfairly and horribly persecuted, he kept silent so that we may believe and have everlasting life (Joh 3:16).

When our Lord keeps silent – it is always for our benefit and his Father’s glory (Joh 17:5).
