Living Worthy of the Gospel of Christ
Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,. Philippians 1:27
Living worthy of the gospel is what God expects of every Christian. Many people have set examples of what this should look like. The Apostle Paul is one of them. This snippet briefly summarises eleven statements from his letter to Christians in Rome. Collectively, they provide a guide on how to live worthy of the gospel of Christ.
- Recognise, that like Paul, we are set apart
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, (Romans 1:1)
- Serve, like Paul, in our spirits the gospel
For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you (Romans 1:9)
- Seek, like Paul, occassion to preach it.
So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. (Romans 1:15)
- Be, like Paul, not ashamed of it.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. (Romans 1:16)
- Remember, that according to it, God will judge everyone’s secrets
on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. (Romans 2:16)
- Share it knowing that salvation is by faith
But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. (Romans 10:16-17)
- Comply with God’s plan for salvation
As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. (Romans 11:28)
- Accept that sharing it is part of our priestly service
to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:16)
- Share it in the power of the Holy Spirit
by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God–so that from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ; (Romans 15:19)
- Make it our ambition to share it
and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else’s foundation, (Romans 15:20)
- Rely on God for his strength as we share it
Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages (Romans 16:25)
in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted. 1 Timothy 1:11
