- Know His Names
“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. Psalm 91:14
Knowing the names and titles of our Lord grants us a deeper appreciation of Him. It also enables us to worship Him and pray with confidence. Each name and title has a distinct meaning. For example, His title “Lamb of God” was given because he was sent (by God) to take away the sin of the world (Joh 1:29). Other names and titles include:
- Good Shepherd: This title reflects how our Lord willingly laid down his life. (Joh 10:11)
- Immanuel: This name tells us that our Lord, even as a baby, was God in (sinless) human form when he appeared 2000 years ago, (Mat 1:23, Is 7:14, 1 Tim 3:16)
- Jesus: This name points to how our Lord was in human form so that he could die for the sins of his people. (Mat 1:21, Act 4:11-12, Phil 2:6-8)
- Christ: This name emphasises how our Lord is the one true Messiah, uniquely anointed and ordained by God (Mat 1:16,3:17)
This brief reflection shows that our Lord deliberately chose His names and titles to reflect his divine characteristics. Knowing his different names and titles reassures us that we have a person in heaven who can answer our prayers and help us in any situation. Further, this knowledge deepens our appreciation of Him allowing us to enrich our worship of Him.
Learning the meanings of the names and titles of our Lord is a deeply rewarding experience. One way we can do it is every time we read a verse containing a name or title, we should ask ourselves, what it means and why he chose that name or title for that context.
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13
