Joseph and Mary: chosen to be the parents of Jesus

And her husband Joseph, being a just man … Matthew 1:19

And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”… Luke 1:38

Joseph and Mary were remarkable individuals, each displayed spiritual attributes (see images) that are an inspiration to every one of us.  Together, they took on one of the greatest challenges – and privileges – any person has ever been given: being the earthly parents of the Son of God.  Consider what it must have been like for Joseph and Mary to have the responsibility to care, provide and protect the one who created all things with the Holy Spirit and God the Father (Joh 1:1-4).

It is highly likely that they felt daunted by the responsibility. After all, each demonstrated an understanding of their own failings and sin. We see this when Mary proclaimed God as ‘my Saviour’ (Luk 1:47) and Joseph’s practice (which he did with Mary) of going to Jerusalem once a year to celebrate the Feast of Passover (Luk 2:41).  What must it have been for them to know that within their care was the Lamb of God (Joh 1:29) who did all things well (Mar 7:37).

I also suspect there would have been times when Joseph and Mary doubted their ability and worthiness to raise our Lord.  However, God never doubted their ability or worthiness! God chose them fully aware of who they were and the type of parents they would be.

Perhaps, like Joseph and Mary, we may have doubts and insecurities – but God does not! He sent his son to die for us knowing exactly who we are and would be!  Further, each person who believes has a divine purpose that they are perfectly equipped for by God (2 Co 12:9).

And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him [Jesus]. Luke 2:33

For nothing will be impossible with God. Luke 1:37
