Five Reasons why God is the GREATEST!

May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you! May those who love your salvation say evermore, “God is great!” Psalm 70:4

Throughout scripture, God declares Himself “greater” than many things. In this snippet, we will consider five of these occasions and how each of them reminds us of something exceedingly magnificent about our Saviour God.

ONE: “Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods, because in this affair they dealt arrogantly with the people.” Exodus 18:11

This reminds us that no one can escape God’s righteous judgement (Heb 2:3).

TWO:The house that I am to build will be great, for our God is greater than all gods.” 2 Chronicles 2:5

This reminds us that when we gather in the name of the Lord Jesus, He is present (Mat 18:20).  Further he is the only one worthy of attention.

THREE: “Behold, in this you are not right. I will answer you, for God is greater than man.” Job 33:12

This reminds us that sometimes we (and/or those around us) will be led by the Spirit to endure terrible circumstances just as our saviour was (Mat 4:1, 26:38-40).  Remembering His ways are righteous and inscrutable (Rom 11:33), and that “all things work together for good for those that are called according to his purpose.” (Rom 8:28) is our blessed privilege and our unshakable hope (Rom 5:5).

FOUR: “for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.” 1 John 3:20

This reminds us that nothing is hidden from God (Pro 15:3) who is holy, holy, holy (Isa 6:3, Rev 4:8).  It also reassures us that he sent his Son to die for us, knowing exactly who and what we are, that we might have eternal life if we chose to believe in him (Joh 3:17).

FIVE: “Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. … God abides in us … because he has given us of his Spirit.”  (1 John 4:4,12,13)

This reminds us that He is the supreme righteous authority.  It also reminds us that each of us (believers) faces a ferocious adversity (1 Pet 5:8) who tempts us to betray the One we love and the One who loves us more than we can ever comprehend (1 Joh 4:11).  However, we are conquerors in Christ Jesus (Rom 8:37) equipped both within (1 Joh 4:4) and without (Eph 6:10-17).

Therefore you are great, O LORD God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 2 Samuel 7:22
