- Do whatever he tells you!
Do whatever he tells you!
His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” John 2:5
Imagine you are at a wedding,
- The venue is perfect.
- The bride and groom exude happiness and joy, delighting everyone.
- Each guest is enjoying themselves smiling, laughing and exclaiming how wonderful it is to be here…
And then suddenly, you realise that there are no more refreshments. You know this was the groom’s responsibility. You also know that there is nothing he or you can do about it. The wedding is on the verge of becoming a disaster!
Mary (the mother of Jesus) had this problem (Joh 2:1-12). However, unlike the groom and the guests, she had someone who could save them – that person was our Lord Jesus Christ. Turning to those serving at the wedding she simply told them “Do whatever he tells you” (Joh 2:5). Interestingly, these are the last words of Mary recorded in the Bible and they are relevant for any situation we find ourselves in.
The question is, how did Mary know that our Lord could solve the problem? The answer is simple, Mary knew her son, she had brought him up and saw firsthand, his kindness, love, perfection and ability to bring glory to God in the most challenging situations. She knew that he was the holy one – the Son of God (Luk 1:35) and that nothing was (is!) impossible for God (Luk 1:37).
Her son, the Lord Jesus Christ did not disappoint her turning water into wine much to the delight of the master of the feast (Joh 2:9-10). As amazing as this is, he has done something much better, something for every one of us. He died for our sins and then brought himself back to life (Joh 10:17-18)!
His death and resurrection gives each of us the opportunity to experience joy and happiness for eternity. All we need to do is to accept that his death was for our sins. The alternative is a permanent state of disaster beyond our capacity to imagine.
You are strongly encouraged to consider John 2:1-12 when reading this snippet
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. John 3:18
