- Divine Comfort in Crisis
For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. Psalm 91:3-8
Life can be very difficult causing us to feel worried and upset. Many sections of the Bible remind us that God is faithful and will always provide for us enabling us to be at peace in the most challenging situations (Phil 4:6-7). In Psalm 91:3-8, for example, God reminds us He will:
Deliver us from the snares (traps) that torment us and the deadly pestilence that threatens our wellbeing. (Psa 91:3)
Cover us just as a hen envelops her chicks with her feathers. This is where we find divine comfort and can be wholly preoccupied with God, thereby shutting out the horrors that surround us. (Psa 91:4)
Defend us with His wings by simultaneously shielding us and rebuffing the enemy. (Psa 91:4)
Protect us, knowing His faithfulness cannot fail. The shield and buckler picture armour that can fend off every attack from any direction – there is no weak spot! (Psa 91:4)
Assure us. Our God does not slumber or sleep (Psa 121:3-4), and thus, whether it is the terror and pestilence that pursue us at night or the horror that attacks us in the day, we have no reason to fear as He is watching over us and gives us victory. (Psa 91:5-8)
Reflecting on these reminders can only lead us to conclude that God has promised us something better than a life free from difficulties. It is PEACE, no matter what!
This snippet is the second focussing on Psalm 91, the first one can be found here.
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. Galatains 1:3-5
