Choosing a safe place to dwell

Choosing a safe place to dwell

  2. Choosing a safe place to dwell

Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place– the Most High, who is my refuge– no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot. Psalm 91:9-13

Choosing where to live is a big decision.  Getting it wrong can cause us enormous amounts of misery. In contrast, getting it right will bring us much happiness. Moses got it right; he chose to make the Lord his dwelling place. As a result, the Most High (our Lord) promised he would be safe.  Specifically:

  • No evil would ever overcome him.
  • Plagues would not come near to where he lived.
  • Angels would guard and guide each step.
  • Supremacy over those of great power (lions) and cunning (serpents/adders) wanting to harm him.

Safety was promised because he chose to make the Lord his dwelling place. But what did he mean when he said this? Simply put, he forged a deep and intimate relationship with Him.

By making the same choice, we can experience the same blessings – in a spiritual sense. That is, if we choose to make the Lord our dwelling place, we can be confident that we are completely safe being inseparable from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Rom 8:39).

We make the Lord our dwelling place by believing that he died for our sins to save us from a terrible fate and bring us into an intimate and eternal relationship with Himself. We can deepen this relationship by spending time with Him.  Spending time with Him can take on different forms including reading and studying the Bible, praying (talking to him) and worshipping (glorifying him).

The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it and is safe. Proverbs 18:10
