“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. Psalm 91:14 

We cannot win God’s love, nor can we earn it. But we can hold fast (cling) to Him in love in response to His unconditional love for us (Rom 5:8). His love for us is unparalleled and greater than any human love, as reflected by His sacrifice of His Son for us.

When reflecting on the words “he holds fast to me in love,” an image comes to mind. It is the way a child hugs their parent when they are upset or scared. Many have witnessed the first day of school when the child clings to its parent in a vice-like grip, not letting go under any circumstances. I believe this is a similar image to what Moses may have had in mind when he wrote down these words.

As Christians, we can cling to our Lord in the same way.  However, we can also be certain that He is also embracing us, knowing that our love for Him is nothing compared to His love for us. Three characteristics that help us understand how great His love is, are:

HE LOVES US MORE THAN WE LOVE HIM.

In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1John 4:10

HE LOVED US FIRST

We love because he first loved us. 1 John 4:19

NOTHING CAN SEPARATE US FROM HIS LOVE (IF WE ACCEPT HIM AS OUR SAVIOUR)

[nothing], will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:39

Being able to cling to our Lord in love is a truly amazing privilege. Knowing we are cherished by Him more than we can ever know is truly astounding!
