A house unlike any other – Part 2

The house that I am to build will be great, for our God is greater than all gods. 2 Chronicles 2:5

Previously we considered how the design of the house that Solomon built for God reflected attributes of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (1 Tim 2:5-6).  We also considered how it reminds us that when we gather in His name He is in our midst (Mat 18:20).  Aspects of the house symbolise other aspects of Christian life also, these include:

  • when we gather together it is to his name only (2 Chron 2:1,4). It is exclusively about Him and for Him (Exo 34:14, Col 1:17, Rev 22:13).  Consider, for example, how in the throne room of heaven our Lord God is described as being high and “lifted up” and his train (hem) filling the temple (Isa 6:1).
  • assemblies of God’s people are busy conducting activities that bring glory to His name. Thousands of people (1 Chron 23:4) performed various priestly roles in the house that Solomon built – all of which contributed to the praise and worship ascending on behalf of the nation (2 Chr 2:4). Types of activities that we should be engaged in include breaking of bread and prayers (Acts 2:42).
  • we gain a deeper appreciation of God when we involve ourselves with gatherings that meet in the name of our Lord. As spectacular as the house of God was from the outside, its interior was just as, if not more, spectacular (e.g., 1 Ki 6:18, 23-28). However, only those actively serving as priests could see it (1 Chr 23:24-32, 2 Chr 23:6). This meant that only a small number of people in any generation could see its inner glory.  However, this is no longer the case today. God has declared each believer to be a priest (1 Pet 2:5,9).  As priests, we have the blessing to enter, spiritually (Joh  4:23-24), into God’s presence with confidence through the blood of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (Heb 10:22-23).

When we meet in our Lord’s name, let us always remember it is with one focus, one purpose and we are blessed when we actively participate.

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Acts 2:42
