The Good Soldier’s Armour of Light
The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Romans 13:12
A good soldier uses the correct equipment.
God has provided us with two sets of armour and specialised weapons to repel each of our enemies. The armour of light (Rom 13:12) enables us to reject the passions of the flesh (Rom 7). The armour of God (Eph 6:10-18) empowers us to withstand Satan’s attacks. The weapons (or armour) of righteousness (2 Cor 6:7) give us the ability (through the Spirit) to neutralise the world’s attempts to overcome us.
God, having provided armour, expects us to use it. Putting on the armour of light necessarily means walking closely with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who is the (only) true light (Joh 1:9, 12:46; 1 John 1:7, Rev 21:23). Practically, this means devoting ourselves to knowing more about the one who the centurion described as ‘truly the son the God’ and ensuring, in His strength, our conduct always reflects this divine knowledge.
By walking closely with Him, we will feel His warmth, comfort and guidance — just as we might feel the sun on a winter’s day. Further, it will strengthen our defence against the passions of the flesh. The result being, we will be brighter beacons of hope in a world that is only getting darker.
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
