- Jesus, the Son of God, knows how to help
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16
Our Lord Jesus’s Godly behaviour throughout His life clearly shows He is our High Priest who can sympathise with our weaknesses, … who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin (Heb 4:15).
His conduct, even in the most awful circumstances, was perfect and therefore pleasing to His (and our) Father. He suffered more than any human has, or can, in ways we cannot comprehend. The agony He felt was more than physical.
For example, before His false arrest and the cruel treatment that followed, He chose to pray in a garden called Gethsemane. The name Gethsemane means “olive press” (the machine used to extract oil by crushing the fruit), this is a picture of the agony He knew he would feel reflected in His sweat becoming like great drops of blood (Luk 22:44) knowing what was about to happen. He also felt deep sorrow and trouble (Mat 26:37) and grieved to the point of death (Mat 26:38, NASB).
In addition, I suggest he felt,
- Greatly burdened as He fell on His face to pray (Mat 26:39)
- Deep concern for those he loved. Notice how He showed them loving kindness as He instructed them. (e.g., Mat 26:40-41)
- Lonely, as He repeatedly returned to His disciples only to find them asleep (Mat 26:40,44,45)
- Emotionally, mentally and spiritually burdened as he prayed to His Father three times (Mat 26:39,42,44)
- Betrayed, He was betrayed by one who supposedly loved him and those he came to save (Mat 26:45,46, Joh 1:11)
It is difficult for us to understand the extent of His sufferings. However, we can see that as the Son of God, He knows what it is to experience the same afflictions that we do, demonstrating beyond doubt, that he can grant mercy and give grace to help in time of need.
Jesus, the Son of God knows what we go through, but we will never know the full extent of what he went through.
What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer
