Counsellor – The Ultimate Gift, Part 4

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Isaiah 9:6

An excellent counsellor is patient, kind, compassionate and wise. They listen and understand our problems and help us find ways to solve them. The Lord Jesus Christ is better than any earthly counsellor because he is God in human form. As God, he has unlimited power (omnipotent), knows all things (omniscient) and is everywhere at once (omnipresent).  Further, he loves us more than we can ever know (1 Joh 4:9-10).

These characteristics help us understand why he is the ultimate counsellor. As the ultimate counsellor, he knows us better than we know ourselves. He knows, for example, that we are sinners – destined to experience God’s wrath for eternity (Joh 3:36). He knew this before he created the world (Acts 2:23). He also knew the only hope we have for eternal life was for him to die for us. He willingly died for us knowing the pain, horror and torment he would endure, but out of love, he did it anyway (Php 2:5-8).

These characteristics show us that we need to accept him as:

“…the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Joh 14:6

Amazingly, His divine counsel is not limited to salvation. Each believer has the blessing of knowing that we have the great high priest (the Lord Jesus Christ, Heb 4:15) who is willing and able to help us through every difficulty:

… with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.  Heb 4:16

The blessing of knowing Christ as our Saviour is that we have

the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Php 4: 7

“For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counsellor?” Romans 11:34
