Jesus is Greater
For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. Psalm 95:3
In a previous snippet, we briefly saw how God used people of tremendous faith, divinely designed objects, and heavenly orchestrated instances to help us understand how much greater His Son is than anything in this world. Our Lord Jesus Christ did something similar. Four times he identified himself as being greater than a hero of our faith and once as greater than the temple. Each comparison shows us something amazing and wonderful about who he is and what he did. Declaring himself to be:
- Greater than the temple (Mat 12:6) reminds us He is the fulfilment of the law and He personally brought in a way of salvation based only on faith (Rom 10:4, Joh 1:17, Heb 10:12).
Through him [Lord Jesus Christ] we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:2
- Greater than Jonah (Mat 12:41) reminds us he is the greatest of all God’s servants (Isa 42:1). He voluntarily died (Luk 23:46) and raised himself from the dead (Joh 10:18).
And being found in human form, he [Lord Jesus Christ] humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Philippians 2:8
- Greater than Solomon (Mat 12:42) reminds us His wisdom, worth and words are greater than anything of this world (1 Co 2:4, Eph 3:8, Joh 5:24).
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
- Greater than Jacob (Joh 4:12) reminds us He has given us the greatest gift anyone can give (Rom 6:23)
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. John 10:11
- Greater than Abraham (Joh 8:53) reminds us His authority and love are eternal and the basis of salvation (Rom 4:3).
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. John 17:3
This simple overview shows us that our Lord Jesus Christ is greater the greatest! Further, it challenges us to learn more about him and his love for us (Joh 15:13) knowing that no matter how deeply we study his personality and conduct we will never fully comprehend His wondrous beauty.
