Godly Leadership
Then I [Nehemiah] arose in the night, I and a few men with me. And I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem. There was no animal with me but the one on which I rode. Nehemiah 2:12
In the place where you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us.” Nehemiah 4:20
God has appointed, equipped and instructed many people in the art of leadership. Within the bible, there are many examples including those who led families, congregations and entire countries. For instance, consider:
- Abraham, who led his son, Isaac, up Mount Moriah to worship (Genesis 22)
- Joseph, who under Pharoah’s authority, led Egypt as well as neighbouring nations during a famine. (Gen 41:37-44)
- Moses, who led the children of Israel out of Egypt (Exodus)
- Miriam, who led the children of Israel in praise (Exo 15:20-21)
- Naomi who led her daughter-in-law Ruth to the promised land, mentoring her on where to glean and how to introduce herself lawfully and respectively to Boaz. (Ruth 1-4)
- and many more…
One of the last great leaders of the Old Testament was Nehemiah. The name Nehemiah means comfort of Jehovah. Jehovah is the name for God that describes his almighty unchangeable eternal character. Nehemiah successfully led the reconstruction of the walls of Jerusalem which was essential for its people to have their relationship with our God restored. Seven traits characterised his successful leadership, each of them is outlined in the image displayed in this snippet.
