When our Lord is silent
Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly. Matthew 15:28
This snippet is based on two passages: Matt 15:21-28 and Mark 7:24-30
Our Lord has kept silent on many occasions. For example, he did not answer (at first) a mother’s plea for her daughter to be healed (Mat 15:22-23). Knowing our Lord was her only hope she did not give up but kept pleading. She pleaded so much that the disciples asked for her to be sent away (Mat 15:23). Our Lord however did not want to send her away – he had kept silent in order to bring her closer to him.
When she first pleaded to our Lord she addressed him as “O Lord, Son of David” – effectively recognising him as the King of Israel (Mat 15:22). This title is accurate and true, however, she was not from Israel (Mat 15:22) and therefore showed that she had failed to realise that he was so much more and was wanting to do more for her than only heal her daughter. When she came to him again, she worshipped him and called him just “Lord” (Mat 15:25) effectively confessing him to be her Lord also. Upon this confession, our Lord broke his silence becoming her saviour (Rom 10:9) and healed her daughter instantly (Mat 15:28).
When our Lord keeps silent – it is always for our benefit and his glory.
