Daniel’s Courage and Confidence

“Be of good courage, and let us be courageous for our people, … may the LORD do what seems good to him.”  2 Samuel 10:12

Please read Daniel 2,  prior to reading this snippet.

Daniel faced many dangers in his life – he never ran or hid from them. Consider, for example, the occasion when he demonstrated the courage to promise a ruthless and violent king (Dan 2:5) who had just sentenced him and all his peers to death (Dan 2:13) that he would tell him his dream as well as interpret it (Dan 2:26).  His courage was remarkable distinguishing him from every living person – no one else had this level of confidence, no one else was willing to trust God to that level (Psa 37:5).

Daniel’s confidence was rewarded. Following a time of prayer with three of his peers (Dan 2:17-18), God revealed to Daniel the dream and its meaning (Dan 2:19).  The first thing Daniel did was to praise God (Dan 2:19-23). Anyone else, perhaps in fear of their life, would have immediately gone and told the king his dream saving themselves from being put to death. However, Daniel knew that our Lord is the Almighty God who is worthy of praise and worship, something the king also acknowledged when he heard his dream and had it explained to him:

The king answered and said to Daniel, “Truly, your God is God of gods and Lord of kings, and a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery.”  Daniel 2:47

Daniel’s courage was equal to his confidence in God.  He knew God can do anything.

“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.”  Isaiah 12:2

“Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.”  Psalm 37:5
