the will of God

The will of God

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:1-2

God’s will can be thought of as having two dimensions, His desire and His purpose.  His desire is that we have a close and meaningful relationship with him (1 Cor 1:9).  We can achieve this by learning more about him – reading, thinking and studying (individually and collectively) the scriptures. The Holy Spirit helps us to do this by guiding us into all truth (John 16:13).  Being tuned in to the Holy Spirit’s leading, spending time reading the bible, praying often as well as surrounding ourselves with those who do the same will result in a richer and more fulfilling life giving us a deeper joy and longing for that great day when we shall see him and be like him (1 Jo 3:2).

His purpose for us is to do all to the glory of God (1 Co 10:31).  Importantly, each of us has been appointed to a distinct sphere of testimony (consider, for example, our workplaces, study locations, friends and family).  Further, each of us has been uniquely equipped to fulfil this role (Eph 3:11).  This will be difficult at times, and we will be challenged and tested but God (through his Son the Lord Jesus Christ) has promised a reward, and he will bring it with him when he returns.

“Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense [reward] with me, to repay each one for what he has done.” Revelation 22:12
